Other graduates could be eligible for a tax-free bursary of up to £20,000, depending on the subject they teach and the degree class they hold. Trainees in some areas could also be eligible for an additional payment worth 25 per cent of their standard bursary.
“I started in September and I’ve already worked in three different schools,” says School Direct trainee Ashley Bennett. “The support I have received has been great. I’ve got a tutor at Durham University as well as dedicated support at the school.”
The average starting salary for teachers now stands at £23,010, and nine out of ten new teachers who want to teach are currently finding work within 12 months of qualifying.
