Robot admin firm Blue Prism more than doubled customer numbers last year thanks to booming American demand for office automation.

The fast-growing software company, which uses computer algorithms to do menial office tasks, has 700 customers, up from 271 last year.

The US customer base shot up to 214 at the end of April from 58 the same time last year. Blue Prism has offices in Austin, Miami, Chicago, New York and San Francisco.

Chief executive Alastair Bathgate said: “We’re investing more in the US than elsewhere. It’s the market that the world copies and it’s no accident it’s performing well.”

Sales for the half year ended 30 April rose 145% to £22.9 million. It made a larger loss of £4.1 million, versus a £2.7 million loss last time.

Customers include Coca-Cola, Commerzbank, IBM, Nokia, Procter & Gamble and Zurich.

The company has been on a hiring spree to keep up, taking employees to 271 from 127 last year.
