Splashing out on adverts and marketing for Irn Bru and Orangina helped sales soar at owner AG Barr, it revealed today.

The Glasgow-based drinks group reported total sales for the 15 weeks to May 11 up 5.2% compared to last year.

The first-quarter sales growth is ahead of the wider soft-drinks market which, according to Nielsen data, grew 1.9%.

The update came as AG Barr announced that chairman Ronnie Hanna will retire at the end of the year. Non-executive director John Nicolson has become deputy chairman and will replace Hanna when he leaves.

The group is also seeking a replacement for finance director Alex Short who will leave by August for whisky group Edrington.

AG Barr shares bubbled up 6p to 629p today but analysts warned the next few months could be difficult for the group.
