Amazon to open London base after signing Shoreditch office deal

Amazon is to open a new London base in the heart of the capital’s technology quarter in Shoreditch.

The US online retailer has signed a deal with developer with Brookfield to be the main occupier of the £500 million Principal Place development between Liverpool Street and Shoreditch High Street stations.

The 15-storey building will give Amazon enough space for 5,000 staff across three London buildings. Christopher North, managing director of Amazon.co.uk, said: “We have already invested over £1 billion and created more than 7,000 permanent jobs across the UK. To support our continued growth in the UK, we have secured this building giving us the capacity to hire thousands of new employees in London.”

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: “I am very pleased that Amazon have confirmed their intention to create thousands of new jobs at a new base in east London. We are proving time and again that we have the right places and people to support this vibrant sector.”

Construction will commence later this month and Amazon will move in the year after the development’s completion in 2016.

Amazon currently has two corporate offices in London — 60 Holborn Viaduct which opened last year and the Amazon Development Centre, which opened on Glasshouse Yard, near the Barbican, in 2012.
