Size may not be everything but Apple is resorting to boosting the size of the iPhone screen in a bid to see off rivals who have made inroads on its sales with larger screens.

Suppliers in China are starting to ramp up production of larger iPhones ahead of Apple’s annual new product launch event.

The new phone should be ready for the market around September, according to Bloomberg.

The current iPhone 5 has a mere four-inch screen compared with recent phones from Samsung and HTC, which have 5.7-inch screens. Apple is preparing to launch phones with 4.7 and 5.5-inch displays.

Consumers, particularly in China, are gravitating towards larger screens. Of the android-based phones sold in the country this year 40% had screens of five inches or larger.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook needs to come up with something to kick start growth in iPhone sales which last year accounted for more than half the group’s revenues.

Hon Hai Precision Industry will recruit over 100,000 people in mainland China to produce the newest iPhone from Apple, Taiwan’s Economic Daily News reported, in what the report called the firm’s largest hiring spree in China.
