Britain’s biggest mobile company, EE, today said sales of Apple’s new iPhone6 have smashed records, and consumers have been particularly keen on the big screen iPhone6 Plus.

“We had not expected that it would be more successful than the iPhone5,” said chief executive Olaf Swantee, who described sales of the iPhone6 as “even stronger” than the 2012 debut of the earlier model.

The iPhone6 Plus has also been “more than successful than we expected” as smartphone users embraced the bigger screen. “Video and TV is better on a bigger screen,” said Swantee.

EE, whose shareholders Orange and T-Mobile are tipped to float the business for £12 billion next year, added 1.4 million higher-paying 4G customers in the quarter, quadrupling that base to 5.6 million in a year.
