Asda is losing sales faster than any of its big three biggest rivals amid the fiercely competitive supermarket price war, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

Sales at the Walmart-owned retailer were down 3.5% last month, leaving the retailer with a 16.5% share of the market, compared to 17.1% last year.

In contrast, Tesco and Sainsbury’s sales were down 1.3% each.

Tesco, still the UK’s biggest supermarket, continued to see its market share decline, albeit at a marginally slower rate, despite a wide range of initiatives from boss Dave Lewis designed to bring shoppers back in store.

But Morrisons, where new chief executive David Potts quickly made his mark, has switched into recovery mode, recording the largest sales increase among the big four retailers for the second month in a row.

It increased market share for the first time in nearly four years.

Discounters Aldi and Lidl continued their march up the grocery league table - Aldi increased its sales by 15.4% and Lidl by 9.1%.

In a separate report, Ocado said it has seen a bounce in sales, but disappointed investors by the absence of an announcement on its first international retail partner.

Chief executive Tim Steiner insisted that the online grocer was still on track to reveal its first overseas business partner this year, following its tie-up with Morrisons.

Pre-tax profits dipped to £7.2 million from £7.5 million last year. Shares slipped almost 5% to 410p.
