Carpetright gets a boost as rain draws shoppers

Carpetright today became one of the few retailers to praise the rain, saying it had brought in customers looking for warm flooring and a new bed.

In the 12 weeks to July 21 like-for-like sales at the troubled firm were up 1.7%, although total sales slipped a bit because of store closures. Carpetright has issued a raft of profit warnings over the past couple of years, but the move into the bed business has proved a success.

Chief executive Darren Shapland said: “This period does include some benefit from the unusually wet weather, which has produced positive customer footfall.”
