Games boom pops up in Covent Garden

London landlord Capital & Counties has a full house at Covent Garden just in time for the Olympics and the influx of thousands of tourists into the area.

The landlord, which owns most of the area around Covent Garden’s piazza, has drafted in a variety of pop-up shops, including several luxury brands, to entice tourists to spend.

Today Chanel’s first make-up and perfume shop opened, and followed shops from New York fashion export Opening Ceremony, Brazil’s jelly shoe brand Melissa and menswear brand Hackett London. Many of these pop-up shops will stay until just after Christmas while Opening Ceremony will move from its existing mooring to a new permanent shop on King Street, close to Burberry Brit, in October. The shops join restaurants including Jamie Oliver’s Union Jacks and cult London burger joint MEATmarket.

Capital & Counties, which signed up the brands to ensure all the shops would be full in time for the Olympics, is on track for the area to generate £50 million in annual rents by the end of next year.
