Lights, camera, tweet: Twitter launches video

The cliché that people tweet about their breakfast should be updated to users posting videos of their Weetabix after Twitter launched a way to record, edit and share videos of up to half a minute.

The US tech giant — through which 500 million 140-character tweets are sent each day — is also taking on Facebook’s messaging app WhatsApp by launching group direct messages.

The feature will allow users to have group conversations.

Twitter’s video camera means “in just a few taps you can add a video to unfolding conversations, share your perspective of a live event, and show your everyday moments, without ever having to leave the app,” the firm said.

It’s available for iPhone users from today, and will be on the Android app “soon”.

Twitter has already had success with its Vine video-sharing service, which lets users send out six-and-a-half-second clips. One in five tweets already contain a link to a Vine video.
