Rangers to hold shareholder meeting at Ibrox after second London venue pulls out

Rangers fans may finally have got what they wanted, as the crisis-hit football club has moved its controversial shareholder meeting to its Ibrox stadium after two proposed London venues pulled out.

The Grange Hotel at Tower Bridge pulled out of the extraordinary general meeting after receiving "threats from persons unknown", Rangers said in a statment.

"Accordingly, the new venue for this General Meeting will be Ibrox Stadium, in Glasgow, at a date to be determined," the statement added.

The Millennium Gloucester in Kensington cancelled the club's original booking following fears angry fans would mob it.

The decision to hold the event in London instead of Glasgow has deepened some fans' frustration, who saw the move as a tactic to prevent people from attending.

The meeting, which was due to be held on March 4, was called by stakeholder Dave King who wants to oust most of the current directors and form a smaller board.

The board has again asked shareholders not to back King, who owns a 14.5% stake and whose convictions over his tax affairs in South Africa could mean he does not meet the SFA’s fit and proper rules.

Instead, the board is recommending a new set-up with directors from all three of the biggest shareholder groups, including Sports Direct’s Mike Ashley and the so-called Three Bears group of local businessmen.
