John Lewis is poised to sign for a new store in the massive extension of the Westfield London shopping centre in Shepherd’s Bush, a move that will see the retailer bookend the Central line.

Middle England’s favourite department store is in advanced talks with Australian property developer Westfield to be the anchor tenant for the £1 billion-plus extension that is scheduled to go live in 2016.

The John Lewis store in the 550,000-square-foot extension, including 1522 new homes, would provide competition to Debenhams and House of Fraser, which have been in Westfield London since it opened in October 2008.

John Lewis spokesman said it is “always looking at new opportunities for expansion and growth however, we don’t comment on market speculation”. In addition to Brent Cross, it has shops on Oxford Street and in Westfield Stratford City, pictured.

Westfield would not comment on John Lewis but said it had secured “outline” planning approval for the extension.
