Entrepreneurs need courage and daring to succeed in business, Ann Summers chief Jacqueline Gold told last night’s Business Connections event.

Gold said that tax relief on childcare would help women to prosper in the boardroom and business rates should be capped to help the High Street, but added that “governments are not around long enough to put their policies into effect”.

Her lingerie and sex toys chain has benefited from the Fifty Shades of Grey bondage novel which means “nervous customers have become curious and the curious have been shopping”.

Gold believes in keeping business simple. “There is no red tape holding us up — but we might have some pink bondage tape holding us down,” she said.

Business Connections is the Evening Standard’s entrepreneurs’ club. More details of future events and exclusive content at es-bc.co.uk.
