Sunday People worries after deal talks fail

The Sunday People was today facing fresh uncertainty after Trinity Mirror admitted that talks with a group of investors looking to buy a stake in the red-top paper had ended “without agreement”.

Trinity said in January that it had an approach from a consortium called Phoenix Ventures, which included former Sunday Express editor Sue Douglas and ex-ITV commercial director Rupert Howell.

Like all Sunday papers, the People’s circulation has been falling, down 10% to 416,000 on a year ago — less than half that of sister paper the Sunday Mirror.

Editor James Scott was arrested in connection with phone hacking in March but has not been charged.
