Carillion wins UK contracts and ups profits to £182m

Building and support services group Carillion today posted a 16% increase in profit, thanks to a strong Middle East performance and contract wins in Britain.

The firm said it had an order book of £17.7 billion last year and forecast further progress in 2010.

Carillion, which generates much of its revenue from government work and public private partnership projects, made an underlying pre-tax profit of £182.2 million in 2009.

Analysts' consensus forecast was £176.9 million and £157.5 million reported in 2008. Revenue increased 4% to £5.4 billion.

Carillion ended the year with net cash of £24.9 million, compared with net borrowing at the end of 2008 of £226.7 million. It is paying a dividend of 14.6p, up 12%.
