City Spy: Warrior of Wall St’s youthful ambition

20 July 2015

Lynn Tilton, the self-styled warrior of Wall Street and boss of Patriarch Partners, is at it again.

Following the latest round in her battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission over claims that she misled investors, the private equity boss has explained her long-term ambitions.

“When this is all over, I hope that my dream to be an island girl will come true,” Tilton sighs to Bloomberg. “The problem is I don’t look as good in a thong bikini as I did 15 years ago.” Priorities in the right place, then.

*Spy is pleased to see that our lambasting of PRs for offering to “reach out” and “share” stories has been welcomed by many. One reader writes: “Have you heard about ‘pivoting’ yet? As in, ‘that’s a great idea, I think we could pivot that into the conversation with xyz next week’ — what’s that all about? Tossers.” Quite.

Corner cut in kerbing Café Royal scrapes

Rarely are the interests of celebrities, City types and Westminster City Council aligned, but welcome news abounds for the unlikely trio.

Those pulling up to the Café Royal Hotel in Piccadilly, a favourite of high-fliers in luxury cars, had been getting rather angry. The fearsomely sharp kerb outside the hot spot kept ripping into posh motors, leaving its owners fuming and the hotel red-faced.

Staring down the barrel of a huge bill to rip out the kerb and endless weeks doing it, the council turned to contractor FM Conway and designer WSP, who have sliced the offending concrete at 45 degrees.

That will save those darlings from getting into any more troublesome scrapes.

Fighting talk ahead as property heavyweights prepare to square up

The first rule of Fight Club is, you do not tweet about Fight Club — that’s how it goes, right?

Well obviously someone’s been breaking the rules, as Spy spots #FightClub creating waves on Twitter. Was it Ed Norton and Brad Pitt bemoaning the demise of the Fail Whale?

Alas not. It was property types getting excited about a Props charity debate between Mike Slade of Helical Bar and Bruce Ritchie of Residential Land, slated for the Dorchester in October. The pair will thrash it out in a commercial real estate v residential debate, a third speaker — Robert Paulson — is as yet unconfirmed.
