Two property agents trading in both town and country at the time of Thomas Hardy are reshaping themselves for the 21st century. Cluttons (founded 1765) announced this week it will be rebranding, swapping historical red to contemporary blue in February. The 400-strong firm stands at number 17 in the Estates Gazette league table with a UK turnover of £31 million. Now is judged the right time for a jolly good shake-up.
This will result in more exploitation of Cluttons’ strong links in the Middle East. “With further international expansion planned and continued improvement in the markets in which we operate, we look forward to 2014 with a great deal of confidence,” says boss Bill Siegle.
I gave a talk to staff last week, and opined that Cluttons seemed solid and unchanging. Got that wrong. I could detect the whiff of fresh carpet in the West End offices of Carter Jonas last week. Carter who? You may well ask. The 500-strong partnership rooted in the county towns of England since 1855 has come to the Big Smoke. Or, more accurately, drawn together its London efforts into 7000 square feet of rented space behind Oxford Street’s Debenhams.
The partnership manages a million acres of farmland, and the 28 partners are led by Mark Granger. Carter Jonas is number 14 in the EG league table with a turnover of £34.2 million. News this week to prove CJ’s townie credentials: the firm has been appointed by Hounslow council’s pension fund to sell £20 million of properties — including a little one in the Square Mile.
