How can we make the world a safer place? That’s the subject of a free, international two-day hybrid conference taking place in London during early May.

The Safer World Conference 2022 will bring together 50 inspiring thought leaders from the worlds of business, government, research and academia.

They will discuss the biggest safety challenges we are facing across the globe – and the approaches needed to solve these problems for future generations.

Discussing challenges faced

Lloyd's Register Foundation

The event, which is being organised by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, will be held on 10 and 11 May at Old Billingsgate Market in central London. It will also be broadcast online.

Lloyd’s Register Foundation is an independent global charity that aims to engineer a safer world by reducing risk and improving the safety of the critical infrastructure that supports society.

It does this by supporting high-quality research, accelerating technology to application and through education and public outreach.

At the event, topics under discussion will include safety in a post-Covid world, how to maintain sustainable oceans, and whether businesses can combine profit with social purpose.

The future of industrial safety, engineering skills and education, the true value of safety, and understanding risk will also be covered in detail.

A distinguished line-up of international speakers will give delegates some invaluable insights into their specialist subjects.

These include: Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, president of the World Maritime University; James Alix Michel, the former President of the Republic of Seychelles; Professor Alex Edmans, Author of Grow The Pie and Professor of Finance and Academic Director, Centre for Corporate Governance, London Business School; Nick Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd’s Register; John Dony, director of the National Safety Council; and Dr Lijun Tang, a lecturer in international shipping and port management at the University of Plymouth.

Networking focus

Lloyd's Register Foundation

Of course, one of the most valuable benefits of such an event is being able to discuss the important issues raised with fellow delegates.

It’s why this conference will offer ample opportunity for panel debates, networking and informal discussions to share views and potential solutions.

There is also an afternoon drinks and dinner reception on Tuesday 10 May, along with the screening of the documentary film Searchlight. This includes a Q&A session with the RNLI’s Jamie Chestnutt and award-winning journalist Dan McDougall.

Showcasing of work

Lloyd's Register Foundation

The event will also enable delegates to discover more about the remarkable grant-funded projects that Lloyd’s Register Foundation is involved in around the world.

As this year marks the Foundation’s 10th anniversary, it will be showcasing the worldwide impact of the independent global charity’s work over the past decade.

This will include a special debate on the subject of ‘profit with purpose’, in order to highlight the role that social purpose organisations can play in wider society.
