Greene King to launch pub grub delivery and takeaway service in London

Greene King is introducing delivery and takeaway services from some of its London pubs

Greene King on Thursday said it will launch a pub grub delivery and takeaway service in London, in a move that will bring in income during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The pubs operator and brewer said 29 sites in its Metropolitan Pub Company division in the capital will start the service from May 22, via Deliveroo. Ten of the venues will also offer click and collect.

Customers have been able to buy bottled beers online on the Greene King shop, but the new service will bring Londoners food and drink much quicker. Dishes on offer will include beer battered fish and chips, burgers and Sunday roasts.

Like rivals, Greene King had to shut pubs during the virus outbreak, and the earliest the sector can start to potentially reopen them is from July 4.

Greene King’s chief executive Nick Mackenzie said the latest move “provides us with a new revenue stream while our pubs remain closed and allows some of our team members to return to work".

He added: “We are looking at how we can further extend the offer to more pubs in the future.”

The company said there will be strict guidelines to ensure health and safety for staff, delivery riders and customers. That includes social distancing, PPE being available and a one-way system for customers to collect orders.

The takeaway sites sit within Greene King’s Metropolitan Pub Company division. Pubs such as The World’s End in Finsbury Park and the Durrell Arms in Fulham are among those offering delivery.
