JCB is shipping and donating $250,000 (£190,000) of vital heavy-lifting equipment to help the relief effort in earthquake-struck Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The British company is sending to the isolated city of Palu a heavy lifting machine already at a dealership on the island, and another from a dealer on neighbouring Java.

The telescopic handling machines are capable of lifting loads of several tonnes, and will be supplied with buckets, forks and a grab attachment.

Transport is difficult because of the damage to the country but JCB says the equipment will get there in the next three days.

The machine already on Sulawesi will be transported by road, using its on-board grappler to drag itself through damaged routes.

The one on Java will be transported to the Sulawesi port of Makassar before travelling 825km by road to the disaster site.

JCB’s sales specialist at the Sulawesi dealership is accompanying the machinery to train locals in how to use it.
