London MPs in boroughs where failed chain BHS is due to close its doors have thrown their weight behind calls for former owner Sir Philip Green to tackle the retailer's £571 million pension deficit.

The demands from Bermondsey & Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle and Ealing Central’s Rupa Huq came a day after Green was labelled the “unacceptable face of capitalism” in a report from MPs.

Topshop tycoon Green is working with the pensions regulator to achieve an outcome.

Coyle told the Evening Standard that staff at Surrey Quays “were right to be furious with the way they have been treated”.

He added: “Green should provide greater help to store staff to find new work and should repay the pension scheme in full as soon as possible.”

Huq said: “Green must accept personal responsibility.”

The 163-stores chain collapsed in April- 13 months after it was sold for £1 to Retail Acquisitions, led by serial bankrupt Dominic Chappell.

Green yesterday said: “With the benefit of hindsight, clearly Retail Acquisitions and Mr Chappell were a very bad choice as purchaser on many fronts and I feel badly let down.”
