Med cruiser to be P&0's biggest-ever ship

Satisfying demand: The 141,000-tonne vessel will carry 3611 passengers, even more than the heavier Queen Mary 2

P&O Cruises today ordered its largest-ever cruise ship. It will operate out of Southampton and come into service in March 2015.

The as-yet-unnamed vessel weighs in at 141,000 tonnes and will carry 3611 passengers on regular cruises around the Mediterranean and Baltic.

That will make it the second-largest ship owned by Carnival Corporation. The Queen Mary 2, which sails under the Cunard flag, is heavier at 151,000 tonnes but carries only 3056 passengers.

Micky Arison, Carnival Corporation chairman and CEO, said: "The UK continues to be a key growth market for Carnival and innovative vessels such as this new P&O Cruises ship - targeted specifically to British clientele - underscore our commitment to expanding this important cruise region."
