In the air: TV picture doesn’t look good for 3D

Are broadcasters cutting back on 3D TV commissions? That’s the chatter among TV producers.

Sales of 3D TV sets have been slow and there’s a lack of shows to watch as few companies have the budget or inclination to shoot in 3D — bar the Hollywood film studios and some high-end sports broadcasters. Sky does have 400,000 homes which take 3D. But most of us seem to feel that having to wear funny glasses to watch telly is more trouble than it’s worth.

* Managing “special situations” and corporate reputations for clients such as News Corporation, Nat Rothschild and BP is paying off for public relations firm Powerscourt, run by ex-Sunday Times business editor and former Goldman Sachs spinner Rory Godson. Abbreviated accounts show shareholder funds rose by £1.34 million last year. There is little other detail but it is understood revenues rose 22% to £5.9 million and margins were around 30%, suggesting profits of £1.8 million.

* A sobering message at last week’s D&AD Awards for global design and art direction when no gongs were given in two categories: Magazine & Newspaper Design and Press Advertising. Similarly, at this week’s Cannes Lions festival of creativity, there has been a record number of award entries for most categories from TV to digital — except print. D&AD President Neville Brody, ex-designer of The Face, says: “The problem is print is scared. We forgot to take the chances we’re famous for.”

* Lord Mandelson just loves yachts: The ex-Business Secretary, who chairs advisory firm Global Counsel, was due to take part in an invitation-only debate on board ad man Johnny Hornby’s yacht at Cannes today, with dotcom guru Brent Hoberman and Facebook Europe’s Nicola Mendelsohn. Mandy was in Corfu in 2008 with George Osborne and Oleg Deripaska in Corfu when they infamously met on the oligarch’s boat.
