Morrisons' Hounslow store is among the branches the supermarket is planning to close in a move that could put almost 700 jobs at risk, it has been revealed.

The company confirmed on Friday that the London shop is among the seven proposed closures it flagged in its Christmas trading statement on Tuesday.

Around 680 jobs could be axed if the stores are shut. Morrisons said it will enter a 45-day consultation period with staff over the issue.

The other stores involved are:

  • Westgate, Bradford
  • Wigan, Great Manchester
  • Boston, Lincolnshire
  • Stowmarket, Suffolk
  • Braintree, Essex
  • Tunbridge Wells, Kent

The news follows a string of closures by the Bradford-based firm, which is seeking to reverse several years of poor performance.

It has also sold off its M Local convenience chain and made head office cuts.

The turnaround efforts, initiatied by new boss David Potts, helped it produce a surprise 0.2% rise in like-for-like sales over its Christmas period.

There are no further store closures planned.
