Streatham's Morrisons store is among the 11 the supermarket is set to axe under plans to revive the company following years of sales decline.

The Bradford-based grocer announced the closures last week, a day after it sold off its convenience-store M Local business at a £30 million loss.

The measures are part of new chief executive David Potts' attempts to turnaround the business, which reported another quarter of falling sales last week.

Morrisons has already cut 10 supermarkets at a loss of 430 jobs and shrunk the size of its head office by 720 jobs.

Around 900 jobs are at risk in the latest cuts.

A Morrisons spokesman confirmed the 11 stores as follows:

West Bromwich (Hawthorns), West Midlands

Salford, Greater Manchester

Burnham on Sea, Somerset

Castletown, Sunderland

Clevedon, Somerset

Little Hulton, Greater Manchester

Northallerton, North Yorkshire

Oldbury, West Midlands

Shildon, County Durham

Streatham, London

Tyldesley, Wigan

Potts previously said the stores had become "part of the problem rather than the solution".

The company said it would try to find new jobs for those affected.

“We have looked extremely carefully at whether the stores can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making them viable,” a spokesman said.

We will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and redeploy colleagues around our business.”
