Production soars at UK car plants

British factories produced 37% more cars in August than a year ago, as the manufacturing recovery continued apace.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said carmakers turned out 77,882 vehicles in August, of which 57,005 were for sale overseas — a rise of 52% in exports on the year.

This was in contrast to official statistics showing that manufacturers in general have been struggling to boost exports despite the relatively weak pound.
