RBS ends its clearout with an Oz recruit

Hiring: RBS has gone to Australia for its latest board member
11 April 2012

Royal Bank of Scotland has gone to Australia to find an executive to run its UK retail businesses, wealth management arm and Ulster Bank.

Brian Hartzer, 42, is a joint US and Australian citizen who has been with ANZ for 10 years, most recently as chief executive of its entire Australian business.

He takes over from Gordon Pell, deputy chief executive, who is the last remaining board member from the Sir Fred Goodwin era and is retiring with a £517,000 pension early next year after he hits the age of 60. Hartzer used to work for RBS non-executive director John MacFarlane, who was chief executive of ANZ.
