SABMiller more potent in Europe on Turkey tie-up

11 April 2012

SABMiller today stole a march on Heineken as it beat its continental rival to a deal that positions it to buy one of the biggest brewers in Europe.

The London-based brewer behind Miller and Peroni has struck a partnership with Turkey's Anadolu Efes that includes an option for SAB to buy the beer giant if its family owners decide to sell.

Anadolu Efes is seen as the last big takeover prize for the big four European brewing giants. Based in Turkey, it has major positions in Russia and states such as Moldova, Georgia and Kazakhstan.

The deal is structured so SABMiller effectively sells its Russian and Ukrainian beer business to the Turkish brewer in return for a 24% stake. It puts an enterprise value of $1.9 billion (£1.2 billion) on the two companies' Russian and Ukrainian businesses and creates the second biggest brewer in Russia by value after Carlsberg's BBH division.
