Stephen Green ‘staying as HSBC chairman’

Stephen Green today quashed speculation that he is about to stand down as chairman of Europe's biggest bank, HSBC.

He told shareholders at a packed meeting in the Barbican that he "looked forward to chairing the next annual meeting in 2011".

Non-executive director John Thornton, a former head of Goldman Sachs, has been widely tipped to succeed Green.
