I would like to pay tribute to PC Keith Palmer for his bravery and sacrifice during the Westminster attack. He stood open-handed in the way of harm without a weapon to protect himself from his assailant.

Terrorism is born of loneliness, isolation, rejection and fear. The strongest weapon we have against it is not to fear it but to show the world that every voice can be heard without violence.

That is what a police officer says when he or she goes out on duty without a weapon. It is a statement that police officers are not here to enforce or control, but to assist and protect.

That PC Palmer stood defenceless at Westminster on Wednesday was the strongest and most powerful thing he could do in defence of our safety and freedom. It is the single- greatest reason why I am proud to be British.

Thank you, PC Palmer. I honour your service and will never forget it.
