The Justice Secretary says Fujitsu, the firm behind the faulty Post Office Horizon accounting software, may have to repay the ‘fortune’ spent on the scandal.

Alex Chalk says that if the inquiry, which resumes today, finds the “scale of the incompetence is as we might imagine”, ministers would want to secure proper recompensation on behalf of the taxpayer.

Between 1999 and 2005 hundreds of Post Office branch managers were wrongly convicted for false accounting and theft.

Some went to prison, many were financially ruined and some have since died.

On Wednesday, the government announced a new law to "swiftly exonerate and compensate victims".

The Japanese firm’s chief technology officer, Yoshinori Matsumoto, has told the PA news agency that he believes the metaverse could follow a similar path to the world wide web, and eventually become “essential for our lives”.
