West End Final newsletter: Sabina Nessa murder - five unanswered questions

Sabina Nessa should have been safe on her walk. But as we report today, the 28-year-old primary school teacher disappeared on that five-minute journey on the way to meet a friend at a bar, her body found in the park nearly 24 hours later.

This tragedy did not take place in isolation. Violence against women and girls remains pervasive in the capital and beyond.

Nessa’s murder has raised a number of questions, and our Home Affairs Editor Martin Bentham asks - and attempts to answer - five of them.

Sadiq Khan today warned of an “epidemic” of violence against women, and called on men to be “allies” in tackling the problem. He said that new legislation to make misogyny a hate crime and outlaw street harassment should be introduced as part of the solution.

As we write in our leader column, “every single woman and girl has the right to live her life — walk the streets, come to work or school, relax at home — without the fear of violence and intimidation.”

Elsewhere in the paper, the mayor has warned that the Tube could become ‘unbearably hot’ and stations left flooded as a result of climate change.

In the comment pages, John Arlidge welcomes the return of travel and nails his post-Covid charter of travellers’ rights to the door. Meanwhile, Emma Loffhagen agrees with Daniel Craig: we don’t need a female James Bond.
