Paperback: Granta 126 (£12.99)

Another strong collection of fiction, true stories, poems and photographs. There’s a lovely little fragment by Lydia Davis, the master of lovely little fragments. It’s about spelling. How do you spell “hemorrhaging”? She asks people. They spell it differently. Is there an “ae” in the word? Or is this a “raed herring”? There’s a piece by Olivia Laing about the New York artist David Wojnarowicz; it’s an extremely haunting and superb piece of writing. Wojnarowicz died of Aids, and Laing evokes the New York of the recent past beautifully. And Laura Kasischke has written an amazing poem about passing on a cold.
