Bo Burnham is less amazing on the big stage

5 April 2012

Darn Americans, coming over here and stealing our jokes. Comedy fans can hardly move for yarn-spinning Yanks.

Bo Burnham was the revelation of the 2010 Edinburgh Festival, picking up a Spirit of the Fringe Award for his stunning mix of stand-up, music and self-analytical philosophical musings.

On Saturday night the gangly, precocious 20-year-old came to W12 and, while he did not go from hero to zero, he was less mindblowing on the big stage.

He raced through his material, appeared distracted and the acoustics were patchy - the latter not his fault.

While his lyrical genius was unquestionable, some cogs were visible. He is clearly partial to a brilliantly witty list song. He compared love to everything from a tramp finding chocolate coins to urinating in a pool in Love Is, while What's Funny? critiqued comedy clichés, from foreign accents to feeble hand-driers.

Having already mocked generic observational humour, however, a prancing Michael McIntyre parody felt downright mean.
