Pascoe's enjoyable new show, Sara Pascoe vs History, finds the Essex-born comic firing on every cylinder

One of the thrills of regular Fringe visits is seeing a performer move up a gear. In the case of Sara Pascoe it is more like numerous gears. Her new show, Sara Pascoe vs History, finds the Essex-born comic firing on every cylinder.

This could be superficially described as another “funny feminism” monologue, in the vein of Bridget Christie’s acclaimed 2013 set. Pascoe’s stance, however, is more intimate. As well as reflecting on topics such as sperm selection, Miley Cyrus and Page 3, she also dissects her Take That-stalking childhood and her complex relationship with her mother.

Pascoe’s style is chatty, engaging and non-aggressive, faux naive and knowing. She points out that at 33 she has never had a baby but has had a tapeworm: “It’s not the same,” she deadpans. Pregnancy is clearly on her mind. A recent concern is that her boyfriend’s libido is diminishing just as her biologically driven urges have skyrocketed.

If some gags initially seem throwaway they contribute to a memorable finale. This will surely transfer to London carrying at least a Foster’s Award nomination. Do not miss it and arrive on time.

Not only is this show hugely enjoyable but latecomers are welcomed with a brilliantly embarrassing song that will make them vow never to be tardy again.
