Jack Whitehall risked the wrath of his girlfriend, Gemma Chan, last night by telling a risqué joke about their love life at a charity comedy gig.

The 30-year-old actress has previously described how has “to run everything by her first” and that she reviews quips about their life on a “case-by-case basis”.

But Whitehall, 25, admitted he was going against protocol during a set at the Mencap Big Comedy Special at the Hammersmith Apollo.

He said: “I was with my girlfriend – actually she won’t let me tell this story if I say it is her. I have to say it’s a friend of mine. So, a friend of mine was sh***ing my girlfriend…”

He then had the audience in stitches when he poked fun at his posh background by saying he uttered “bravo!” after the moment of intimacy with Chan.

The couple met on the set of Fresh Meat and have been dating for two years.

After the show, he told the Standard: “Gemma gets annoyed when I talk about her – that’s my life.”

Whitehall is about to publish a book he has written with his father, the former celebrity agent Michael Whitehall, and the pair are preparing a show together at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea.

He added: “It’s weird because he’s a 74-year-old man and he doesn’t give a shit about what he says. I feel like my mum trying to keep him under control. It’s a stress and a burden.”

Last night’s comedy gig also featured performances from Russell Howard, Ronni Ancona, Tim Vine and Jon Richardson.
