Meow Meow, Wonderground - cabaret review

The glorious songbird's latest show certainly has the wow factor
Wow factor: Meow Meow delivered self-deprecating gags and sublime songs (Picture: Elliott Franks)

It's cabaret, but not as we know it. Meow Meow enters and throws a wobbly over the lack of flowers being lobbed at her. The mock diva struts off and returns to distribute her own blooms for fans to throw back.

This is the first of many self-deprecating gags from the sublime Australian singer and physical comedian. Her dress is repossessed, spectacular effects turn out to be soggy squibs. Yet amid the organised chaos this glorious songbird emerges triumphant.

Imagine a cross between Lady Gaga, Edith Piaf and Charlie Chaplin and you are still not getting close to the unique magic of Meow. Where else can you see knockabout humour between brilliantly idiosyncratic covers of Fiona Apple, Amanda Palmer and Radiohead?

These contemporary numbers mingle with torch songs by the likes of Jacques Brel, where Meow plays the tragic lover. There is nothing tragic about her performance, though. The crowd is putty in her petite hands, as she invites men onstage and sits on them or organises a Barbie-waving climax.

The night ends with the star crowd-surfing while still singing. There’s no stopping her. If there is a more commanding, charismatic chanteuse working today they are keeping very quiet about it.

Meow Meow certainly has the wow factor.
