Sculptures of girls clog-dancing, bronze cats in distress and a giant kangaroo wearing mittens are among the weird and wonderful works on show at the first exhibition of contemporary art to be held at Horace Walpole’s famous Gothic castle in Twickenham.

The collection of surreal, fairytale-like works by sculptor Laura Ford — with titles such as Sorrow Filled Cat and Little Mouse — are being exhibited at Strawberry Hill House, created by the 18th-century author and art historian. The property inspired Walpole’s The Castle Of Otranto, generally regarded as the first gothic novel. The sculptures, also inspired by Strawberry Hill House, can be seen around the grounds and inside.

Ford, who lives in Camden, studied at Bath Academy and Chelsea School of Art. Her work can be seen in the Tate and the V&A. The exhibition runs until November 1.
