A falling telephone box sculpture in south London has been restored to its former glory to mark its 30th anniversary.

“Out of Order” in central Kingston Upon Thames was installed in 1989 by artist and Royal Academy sculpture professor David Mach, best known for his large-scale works.

The former Turner Prize nominee said he was thrilled to see the results of the renovation of the 12-box artwork funded by Kingston First business improvement district, Kingston Council and local companies.

He told the Standard: “I’m very happy to see Out of Order being refurbished.

“It’s what every sculptor wants, to have what he’s got on the street back in pristine condition.

“I think the telephone box is probably the king of British icons, it’s an incredible thing really, a great design.”

A street party — including entertainers and free photoshoots for all with the iconic sculpture — will run on Saturday to mark the renovation.
