The trailer of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie’s latest film, Babylon, has finally dropped, and it looks like it’s going to be an absolute riot.
Set in the Twenties, and also starring Mexican actor Diego Calva, the film details a hedonistic Hollywood as the industry made its transition from silent films to talkies.
The two-minute trailer is nothing if not eye-boggling: there are extravagant dance sequences, vintage cars going hell for leather across deserts, Robbie being heralded as a star, surrounded by hungry photographers and journalists, shots of some of the Hollywood films being made, scenes of drug-taking and the subsequent fallout, battle scenes, incredible costumes, guns being shot in luxurious Los Angeles villas, Pitt and Robbie in dozens of incredible outfits. There isn’t a moment to catch your breath.
“Always make a scene,” commands the trailer, which seems to show us absolutely everything that’s going to be in the film, while revealing nothing specific about the plot.
As the trailer closes Robbie’s character is at a black tie pool party. “Who wants to see me fight a f**king snake?” she screeches, looking frazzled. “F**k yeah,” shouts Pitt’s character, while the rest of the party cheers.
The chaotic trailer has been whipping up excitement online: “This film looks crazy, been dying to watch this since it was announced, like The Wolf of Wall Street meets Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, can’t wait!” commented one fan on the video.
“Damien Chazelle just keeps proving his talent time and time again,” said another.
The film has been written and directed by Damien Chazelle, whose past writing and directing credits include the very nearly Oscar-winning La La Land and Oscar-winning Whiplash. The film has a packed cast too, which includes Jean Smart (Mare of Easttown), Li Jun Li (Sex/Life), Tobey Maguire, Samara Weaving (Snake Eyes), Olivia Wilde, Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and Jeff Garlin.
Over the last couple of months, Robbie has been causing a stir on the internet as photos of the actor in her Eighties Barbie get-up (think fluorescent visors, pink lycra all in ones) have been amusing fans. She is starring in the forthcoming Greta Gerwig-directed film as Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling who is playing Ken.
Pitt was also the subject of much discussion recently following the August release of his latest film Bullet Train, a comic-book-style action about five assassins on a train that’s speeding from Tokyo to Kyoto. “Bullet Train is only a bit over two hours, but you do start to wonder if it will ever reach the terminus,” said The Standard.
Babylon is coming to UK theatres on January 20, 2023.
