BFI London Film Festival: Hidden gem of the day – Minute Bodies, The Intimate Life of F. Percy Smith

Nick Roddick picks his lesser known must-see for Tuesday October 11
Extreme close-up: the film explores the cinematic technique
Nick Roddick10 October 2016

Lurking behind a dull title lies a cinematic wonderland which will, at the very least, make you reconsider what you thought you knew about the history of cinema and, in particular, the ‘invention’ of close-ups.

Smith was an early 20th-century scientist working with the then-new technology of film coupled with microscopes to record nature in action.

Directed by Stuart Staples, the film makes ingenious use of Staples’s day job as a musician - he was one of the founders of Tindersticks - to produce a truly immersive experience. Who knew science lessons could be such fun?
