Bond movie's freeze-frames

Richard Simpson10 April 2012

Making a James Bond film is a tall order. When the chase scenes from your last 19 movies are among the most talked about in cinema history, then what do you do next to thrill your fans?

The answer is take the entire crew - some 120 members - to a remote frozen lake in Iceland, and race your Aston Martins and Jaguars there at speeds in excess of 150 miles per hour.

The total length of scenes shot at the Jökulsárlón glacial lake for new James Bond movie Die Another Day will reportedly be just five minutes - and the crew is currently filming around 20 seconds of footage a day at a cost of around £200,000.

No one is allowed on the lake's surface without a "float suit" on and four divers are standing by just in case it decides to crack.

The chase involves two cars - a Jaguar XKR and an Aston Martin V12 Vantage.

The Jaguar is driven by villain Gustav Graves, played by Toby Stephens, and features a machine gun which is situated behind the front seats and may possibly rise through the roof.

The metallic green Aston Martin is driven by Bond himself. Both cars have been specially adapted with snow tyres studded with 500 16mm spikes for traction.

At the car chase's climax, Bond escapes from Graves on a small "snow-pad" - a bizarre dart-shaped snowmobile that can also fly - by driving off a 600ft snow cliff.

The chase scenes are painstaking to set up. After each take the ice has to be cleaned by hand by a man with a broom.

A 225-tree forest also had to be created for the scene. The Norwegian spruces were taken from the Hallormsstadur National Forest in eastern Iceland.

Stunt co-ordinator Vic Armstrong described the scene: "It's the climax to the middle of the movie.

"Bond is being chased and he must escape to save Halle Berry (Jinx) from the Ice Palace that's about to sink. It's the scene with all the guns and gadgets."

He said shooting "has gone really well".

"The weather has been great - that was our main concern that it would warm up.

"We have always wanted to use Jökulsárlón. I've never seen anything like this, anywhere. The light here is also incredible and the colour of the icebergs."

Die Another Day will be released in Britain in November.
