Bonsai - review

30 March 2012

A very Latin-American film — the central character is Julio (Diego Noguera), a young would-be novelist who meets Gazmuri, an established writer who wants someone to type out his manuscript. He offers to do it, doesn’t get the job but tells his girlfriend Blanca (Trinidad González) that he got it. Actually, the book he is typing is his own. Blanca says Gazmuri is improving, so Julio is pleased.

The story marches slowly backwards and forwards in time, showing the now younger Julio with Emilia (Nathalia Galgani) when both studied in Valencia, and the film sometimes lacks any straightforward drama. But as Julio searches for a personality, its whispering humour and sensitivity repay our patience.
