City of War: The Story of John Rabe is a powerful true story

Drama: City of War: The Story of John Rabe
10 April 2012

John Rabe was an openly Nazi factory manager who helped establish the International Security Zone which saved thousands of lives during the cruel Japanese onslaught on Nanking before the Second World War.

He was, Florian Gallenberger’s film maintains, another Schindler and is very well played by Ulrich Tukur in a cast that includes Steve Buscemi and Daniel Bruhl.

Rabe is lionised throughout as a somewhat reluctant hero; maybe not all Nazis were bad but this one seems slightly sanitised. (Opens tomorrow)
