Sentimental journey: Dwayne Johnson and Madison Pettis
10 April 2012

You could scarcely conceive of a more formulaic movie than Andy Fickman's tale about a self-absorbed American football star who is won over by the unexpected arrival of a small girl claiming to be his daughter. The cliches would sink a battleship.

But since Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays the star and Madison Pettis the sprog, the film has its fair share of entertainment, even if it is far too long for its own good.

Johnson manages to make fun of himself with wholehearted abandon, while the cutsey Pettis has a wiser head than most when it comes to ordering him about.

Whether attending ballet classes or being spattered with goo when she makes a mess in his expensive new kitchen, he shows a flair for this kind of thing that most other macho stars couldn't manage.

Of course, he wins the championship for the Boston Rebels in the end as well as learning to be a loving father.

Of course it is all grossly sentimental - but there's nothing wrong with decent acting, even in this sort of tripe.
