The Descendants

(Fox, cert 15, Blu-ray/DVD)

Alexander Payne’s first film since Sideways is another road movie, starring George Clooney as the absent dad reconnecting with his daughters on a trip round Hawaii. Gentle, gentle stuff, entirely engaging, funny, a small classic.

Haywire

(Momentum, cert 15, Blu-ray/DVD)

One of Steven Soderbergh’s interesting, low-budget movies, a spy thriller-meets-Seventies wah-chukka-wah exploitationer introducing

new action star Gina Carano, a mixed martial artist who really can kick blokes such as co-stars Michael Fassbender and Ewan McGregor to bits. Cracking.

Klitschko

(Universal, cert 12, DVD)

A documentary about the Ukrainian boxing brothers who managed to be world heavyweight champs at the same time, a first. It’s got intelligence, full access to the charming, gentlemanly duo, lots of great archive fight footage and a really great story to tell.

Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles

(Mr Bong, cert PG, DVD)

Curio of the week is Baker Street’s famous detective seen through Soviet eyes. Made in 1981, it’s a high budget, immensely solid, comforting, deerstalker-and-meerschaum interpretation, a thwacking adventure of the old school.

Intruders

(Universal, cert 15, Blu-ray/DVD)

Something like a Spanish horror version of The Exorcist, with Clive Owen doing another “defiant

dad” number while Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, stylish director of

Intacto, layers the atmospherics in an attempt to spice up the rather predictable plot.

The Bridge

(Arrow, cert 15, DVD £44.99)

Those who have missed the start of the latest Scando-cop show (currently on BBC 4) can start from the beginning with this Series One box set. Relish its seriously good looks, murder darker than rye bread and an austere beauty perfectly incarnated by its icy star Sofia Helin (above) as Saga Norén.
