Extract is a slow, sluggish comedy

10 April 2012

Compared with this silly, sluggish comedy, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butthead shorts were masterpieces of elegant authorship. Extract plays like a fifth-rate, Gentile knock-off of the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man. Jason Bateman stars — for want of a better word — as Joel, the owner of a food-flavouring factory, whose life and marriage start to crumble when an employee loses a testicle in an industrial accident. It could have been a satire on the fragility of the American dream. A mediocre cameo from Ben Affleck as Joel’s barman is the best it comes up with.
