First trailer for The Batman shows Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight

The first trailer for upcoming superhero reboot The Batman sees Robert Pattinson don the iconic mask to fight crime in Gotham City.

Production on the highly-anticipated movie was shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the release date back from June to October 2021.

The film shows Batman when billionaire Bruce Wayne is still in the process of becoming his vigilante alter-ego.

People are "frankly, afraid of him," director Matt Reeves has said and the gritty trailer shows Batman terrifying a group of young people by brutally beating a criminal in front of them.

Other favourites like Commissioner James Gordon, played by Westworld's Jeffrey Wright, and Catwoman, portrayed by Big Little Lies star Zoe Kravitz, are also finding themselves as characters, Reeve added.

Pattinson's version of Bruce Wayne shown in the trailer is less composed than previous incarnations, such as Christian Bale's performance in the Christopher Nolan series from 2005-2012.

"Without being an origin story for him, it’s something that touches upon his origins," Reeve said.

The film's villains are barely shown in the trailer, but Paul Dano has been cast as the Riddler and Colin Farrell will play the Penguin.
