Get your kicks elsewhere

Will Ferrell plays a nerdish vitamin salesman in Kicking & Screaming.

Even the most avid Will Ferrell fans will blanch at this feeble, overlong comedy about American-style Little League soccer, which gives the star absolutely no chance.

As the nerdish vitamin salesman with an over-competitive father (Robert Duvall), he is persuaded to coach his 10-year-old son's hopeless team for a match against dad's own army of tiny experts. The ensuing battle for supremacy between father and son reflects a lifetime of mental slights.

Ferrell, aiming for a wider market than usual, stumbles around like a lost soul in this anodyne movie, and the usually excellent Duvall seems to be trying too hard for the same audience as Robert De Niro in Meet the Parents.

Legendary American football coach Mike Ditka plays himself as Ferrell's cigarchomping assistant and Duvall's neighbour from hell. No one seems to be getting their kicks here - not even the footballers.
