Close encounter: Ritter and Palka

This strange little film has Marianna Palka as a lonely and isolated LA young woman who buys pornography at her local video shop where Jason Ritter’s assistant falls for her. He tries and tries to make contact and eventually beds down at her place, given her by a rich father. But still she resists anything more than a fiercely negative friendship.
Things happen eventually but we never really know what ails her or why the boy is so taken by her mute presence. Palka, who also directs and wrote the piece, is from Glasgow. Her film might have been more convincing set deep in the bowels of that city.
